WHAT'S MY BACKGROUND?
My name is Dr. Valerie McCray and I’m working hard to become your next U.S. Senator representing the great State of Indiana. I was born and raised in Indiana, nurtured in Indianapolis k-12 public schools and am a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School. While navigating the challenges of being a single mother, I earned a BA, MA, and Ph.D from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I am the mother of one adult son, Ryan and daughter-in-law Barbara, and the dog mom of Apollo the German Shepherd and Maya the Husky pup.
WHY AM I RUNNING?
With 35 years in the psychology field (25 years as a licensed Psychologist), I've witnessed how U.S. policies profoundly affect the mental well-being of our people. I’ve worked directly with veterans struggling with PTSD, incarcerated individuals in desperate need of support and rehabilitation, youth struggling to overcome the effects of violence, and more. It's clear that mental health must be a national priority and we cannot address our nation's challenges one mental health crisis at a time. That's why I'm running for U.S. Senate.
WHAT DO I BRING TO THE TABLE?
Because of my work and life experience, I have both a toughness of spirit and an optimism that exudes a contagious excitement about the future of Indiana and our Nation. I am compassionate, fierce, and resilient--and can relate to the struggles of working class Hoosiers. As a mental health clinician, I bring a unique perspective to Congress because I understand firsthand how policy impacts the lives of real people. I'm not just talking about statistics; I'm talking about the human beings behind those numbers. Whether it's improving access to care, addressing root causes of trauma, or advocating for policies that support mental wellness, I will be a tireless advocate for the well-being of every American.
WHAT WILL I FIGHT FOR?.
Relentlessly, I will fight for women’s rights to choose, beyond-subsistence wages, unions, healthcare for all, equal rights for everyone, strengthening public education, and repealing Citizens United so people (not corporations) can be truly represented. In addition, I will champion student loan debt reduction, closing the wealth gap, and funding environmental restoration efforts. I am both compassionate and fierce, and can relate to the struggles of working class Hoosiers.
HOW WILL WE WIN?
As the first ever African American Woman on the Indiana ballot for U.S. Senate, I will break barriers and build a brighter future for Indiana. Join me in this crucial fight for the future of our Nation. I won’t stop until the work is done—and I will beat our Republican opponent who aims to take away our human rights (especially women's rights), water down our education systems, and irresponsibly address immigration issues. Together, we can build a movement for change—one that prioritizes mental health and women's health, and ensures every individual has access to resources needed and policies that help us thrive. With your help, it’s a fight that we can win. Every dollar helps us print flyers, purchase yard signs, run ads, and organize events to connect with voters across our state. Your time, talent, and treasure can push our campaign to new heights. Please share my campaign socials and consider donating to our fight.
Thank you for your support.

On May 7, we made history. We broke barriers. Dr. Val is now the 1st Black Woman to be the Democratic Nominee for U.S. Senate in Indiana! While we made great strides with few dollars during the ballot signature process & primaries, we must secure contributions to win Indiana. We need YOUR help to continue the fight.
