About

Dr. Valerie McCray

My name is Dr. Valerie McCray and I’m working hard to become your next U.S. Senator representing the great state of Indiana. I was born and raised in Indiana, nurtured in Indianapolis k-12 public schools and am a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School. While navigating the challenges of being a single mother, I earned a BA, MA, and Ph.D from University of Michigan.

With 35 years in the psychology field (25 years licensed), I’ve witnessed how U.S. policies profoundly affect the mental well-being of our people. I’ve worked directly with veterans struggling with PTSD, incarcerated individuals in desperate need of support and rehabilitation, youth struggling to overcome the effects of violence, and more. It’s clear that mental health must be a national priority and we cannot address our nation’s challenges one mental health crisis at a time. That’s why I’m running for U.S. Senate.

As a mental health clinician, I bring a unique perspective to Congress because I understand firsthand how policy impacts the lives of real people. I’m not just talking about statistics; I’m talking about the human beings behind those numbers. Whether it’s improving access to care, addressing root causes of trauma, or advocating for policies that support mental wellness, I will be a tireless advocate for the well-being of every American.

Relentlessly, I will fight for breathable (beyond subsistence) wages, unions, healthcare for all, women’s rights to choose, equal rights for everyone, strengthening public education, and repealing Citizens United so people (NOT corporations) can be truly represented. In addition, I will champion student loan debt reduction, closing the wealth gap, and funding environmental restoration efforts. I am both compassionate and fierce and can relate to the struggles of working class Hoosiers.

As the FIRST ever African American Woman on the Indiana ballot for U.S. Senate, I have and will continue to break barriers and build a brighter future for Indiana and our country. Join me in this crucial fight. I won’t stop until the work is done–and I will beat our republican opponent who aims to take away our human rights, water down our education systems, and irresponsibility address immigration issues.

Together, we can build a movement for change–one that prioritizes mental health and ensures every individual has access to resources needed and policies that help us thrive. With your help, it’s a fight we can win.
